{"id":587,"date":"2019-08-20T21:52:20","date_gmt":"2019-08-20T21:52:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/alb.noo.mybluehost.me\/?p=587"},"modified":"2019-08-20T21:52:20","modified_gmt":"2019-08-20T21:52:20","slug":"victims-of-irans-1988-massacre-call-for-justice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/iac-va.org\/victims-of-irans-1988-massacre-call-for-justice\/","title":{"rendered":"Victims of Iran\u2019s 1988 Massacre Call for Justice"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Iran Focus\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 |\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Jubin Katiraie\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 |\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Aug 19, 2019<\/p>\n<p>In the 1980s, the Iranian authorities arrested the parents of human rights activist <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/86Ehsan\">Ehsan Qaraee<\/a> and, following a fatwa by then-supreme leader Ruhollah Khomeini, murdered his father.<\/p>\n<p>Qaraee is now raising awareness of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/human-rights\/20932-the-1988-massacre-in-iran\">1988 massacre of 30,000 political prisoners<\/a>, which Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch have branded \u201ccrimes against humanity\u201d, in order to get justice.<\/p>\n<p>Qaraee told The Express that his mother was savagely tortured in front of her one-year-old daughter.<\/p>\n<p>He said: \u201cMy parents were both teachers\u2014my father was a historian and my mother was a maths teacher. After Khomeini took power they started to arrest people and at the start, they went for academic people. They arrested both of my parents separately in 1981. My sister was just one year old. For a period of three months, they tortured my mother in front of my sister\u2019s eyes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-588 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/iac-va.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/qaraee.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"578\" height=\"301\" srcset=\"http:\/\/iac-va.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/qaraee.jpg 578w, http:\/\/iac-va.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/qaraee-300x156.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 578px) 100vw, 578px\" \/><em>Figure 1- Mr. Qaraee shows his executed parents in Iran on his cell phone<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Qaraee is calling for those responsible to be \u201cbrought to justice\u201d because many of the perpetrators still hold high-ranking government roles today.<\/p>\n<p>He said: \u201cFor me, I would like some recognition from especially the UK Government that this crime was a crime against humanity. And I would like that the UN establishes a committee\u2014a truce committee\u2014and that they investigate this crime. Because all of those who committed these crimes\u2014all of those who were in \u2018death committees\u2019 all around the country\u2014they are still in power. We are talking about Ebrahim Raisi who is the head of the judiciary system in Iran\u2014or Mostafa Pourmohammadi who is Justice Minister.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The main victims of Khomeini&#8217;s political purge in 1988 were members and supporters of the People&#8217;s Mujahedin of Iran (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/pmoi-mek\">PMOI\/MEK<\/a>). Their plight was highlighted in an Amnesty report last year, entitled \u2018Iran: Blood-Soaked Secrets\u2019, where the charity describes the inability of families to be given the bodies of their loved ones as an \u201congoing crimes against humanity\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Amnesty\u2019s lead researcher on Iran, Raha Bahreini, said: \u201cFor three decades, families and survivors and former prisoners have been struggling for truth and justice and they have documented this horrific crime in order to counter the narratives of denial and distortion the Iranian authorities have been perpetuating. We have relied on this legacy of documentation and tried to use the new evidence that has emerged in order to further the struggle of the families and survivors for truth and justice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hossein Fathi, 68, and his wife Fatima Abdi, 53, were also targeted in the massacre and gave Express accounts of barbaric acts of torture that they were subjected to, with Fathi, who lost 14 members of his family, saying the authorities lashed him and hung him from the roof.<\/p>\n<p>While Ahmad Ebrahimi, another victim, said that he and fellow prisoners were blindfolded and taken to an interrogation room for questioning about their support for the opposition.<\/p>\n<p>Mostafa Pourmohammadi, who was on the Tehran Death Committee and sentenced thousands to death, was appointed as Minister of Justice under current Iranian President, Hassan Rouhani.<\/p>\n<p>Amnesty has asked the United Nations to establish an investigation group to find the facts of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/latest\/campaigns\/2018\/10\/blood-soaked-secrets\/\">&#8220;crimes against humanity&#8221;<\/a> in Iran.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iranfocus.com\/en\/human-rights\/33797-victims-of-iran-s-1988-massacre-call-for-justice\">https:\/\/www.iranfocus.com\/en\/human-rights\/33797-victims-of-iran-s-1988-massacre-call-for-justice<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Iran Focus\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 |\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Jubin Katiraie\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 |\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Aug 19, 2019 In the 1980s, the Iranian authorities arrested the parents of human rights activist Ehsan Qaraee and, following a fatwa by then-supreme&hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":589,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[17],"tags":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v22.3 -
